Mori Seiki MH-630 Spindle Repair

The Mori Seiki MH-630 is a CNC horizontal machining center. It comes equipped with an oil mist lubricated and coupling driven spindle that is capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This spindle came in with the coupling for the drive motor attached to the rear of the shaft. Our incoming evaluation found the mating surfaces of these two parts was fretted and out of specification. This was causing vibration in the spindle resulting in poor part finish. This is one of the reasons we request you send as many of the rotating parts of the spindle that is reasonable. If we had not received the coupling and addressed the wear, the lifespan of the repair would have been reduced from the strain of the vibration and wear.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki MH-630 spindle:

Clean all parts of the spindle
Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the spindle shaft and drive coupling as a matched set

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
