The GMN TSSV 100-60000 is a very high speed ID grinding spindle. It comes fitted with oil mist lubrication, stator driven, and capable of running up to 60,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this GMN TSSV 100-60000 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics, the first things we noted was that the bearings felt stiff when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. After fully disassembling and evaluating the spindle, we were surprised to see that the bearings that were removed had steel rolling elements and were not rated for the maximum speed of this spindle model. The rear bearing pair races were discolored, showing evidence of high heat. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a few unacceptable deviations. First, the tooling pilot ID had 8µ runout and the pilot face had 10µ runout. Lastly, the 17mm front and 15mm rear bearing journals were worn very undersized and measured double ISO on both.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this GMN TSSV 100-60000 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the tooling pilot ID
- GPG the 17mm front and 15mm rear bearing journals
- Kiss grind the pilot face
- Upgrade to bearings with ceramic rolling elements to match the spindle speed rating
- Replace o-rings and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
